Take a step. This is what the Ontario Literacy Coalition’s (OLC) 2005-2006 social marketing campaign and public service announcements are asking of the audience. The OLC is asking us to take a step up and to take a step out. We are being asked to take a step towards upgrading our skills as learners and a step into the community as volunteers. We are being encouraged to take a step towards learning and a step towards change. The Take a Step public service announcements (60-sec and 30-sec television and radio) feature a diverse group of real adult learners and volunteers. These individuals, seen in their actual learning environments, discuss how attending classes or volunteering in literacy programs has helped them to take a step toward upgrading their skills, participating more in their community, and changing their futures. Take A Step is both a call to action to prospective learners and a celebration of current learners and their achievements.
